[Atompunk] Wes Jones and BOSS architecture

California architect Wes Jones once wrote a story about aliens
visiting Le Corbusier around the summer of 1916. They were concerned
with humankind's rapid technological advancement in relation to it's
relatively slow emotional development. In an effort turn humans away
from truly embracing and celebrating technology, they convinced
Corbusier to guide it along a more abstract path which would make it
distant and foreign to most people. This effectively kept humans at
bay and the universe safe for aliens.

This was his rationale for remixing and hot-rodding Corb's iconic
lunge chair below - now in the collection of the SFMOMA.

Jones' work is an overt celebration of technology - an almost
fanatical exaggeration of function. He calls it "BOSS architecture"
and likens it to hot-rod culture: everything bolder, brasher and faster.

One of his best and most eloquent examples is the astronaut memorial
in Cape Canaveral, Florida. A massive black granite slab unceasingly
tracks the movement of the sun - rotating and tilting 24/7/365 to
capture the sun's rays and reflect them through the cut out names of
the men and women who died in the name of science and exploration. I
think it's pretty darn Atompunk.
