re all,
astonishingly enough web 2.0 is getting all spoken out, even the
unspeakable... today I've found for the first time a public account on
the web, about the flak towers of Vienna:
http://www.newstatesman.com/europe/2008/07/flak-towers-vienna-city
i've kept discrete about these myself, living three years of my exile
very close to two of them, in the second district of the Austrian
capital. one even had the sarcastic graffiti of "Wiener Melange" on
it. they are a very delicate cultural entity, but a very solid pieace
of concrete. please handle with care. they tried to destroy them with
TNT long time ago: no success.
AFAIK Robert Adrian X (one of the best media artists ever, that you
should really know about) told me privately he was planning an art
project about migration of crows from Russia in winter going to live
on those towers during cold seasons. i'm not sure this project is now
finished, worth asking.
there were even some raves held inside those towers, in the late 90s,
until they fenced them off and arrested some ppl corrupting the youth
to descend these depths... these towers they are 5 (or 6?) in total
in all Vienna, they are connected across the whole city underground,
they are massive concrete and go down for hundred meters or so...
have you ever seen the "Third man" b&w movie? some of it refers to
the underground of Vienna. one of my hobbies has always been going
underground ... :) but while in Amsterdam i've lost the habit, eh eh.
i'm not sure i should really share all this with you. it is some deep
story, anyway let's just do it. again please *handle with care*. i
wish an Austrian could be subscribed to this list, to have some
feedback. these things evoke lots of bad feelings over there. BTW just
for understanding the context, how many and from where are the
subscribers of this list from?
anyway. those flak towers were the nuclear bunkers built to save the
Aryan race in case of nuclear war. i've sneaked in one of them once
or twice, but it's so dangerous to get lost down there...
ciao
